| Inanimate subjects like lifeless abstract nouns or pronouns as sentence subjects are a unique language phenomenon in English.But Chinese language often takes animate nouns or pronouns as subjects to express a subjective feeling.This subject difference has posed an obstacle to translation between English and Chinese.Thus,the translation of inanimate subjects in English are of some study significance.This practice report is the abridged translation of Malaysia’s Economic Success Story and Challenges,a business text,to study inanimate subjects and explore approaches to translating them into Chinese.This report starts with the definition of inanimate subjects and discusses differences in subjects from the aspect of languages and thinking patterns between the East and the West.Meanwhile,inanimate subjects in this report are classified according to classification study.Under the guiding principal of Reiss’s Theory on Text Typology and Translation,the source text belongs to the type of informative text,and finally the translation methods of inanimate subjects are concluded,specifically including linear translation,conversion,omission,translation in the reverse order,division and comprehensive translation.In the combination of theory and practice,the paper draws the inspiration,which can provide reference for the future translation and study of English and Chinese inanimate subjects. |
