As language symbols to record culture,culture-loaded words are the historical precipitation of a country or a nation’s way of life and the core of cultural spirit. With the rapid development of the world economy and cultural exchange, the translation of culture-loaded words has attracted more and more attention. And related studies mainly focus on skopos theory, relevance theory, functional equivalence theory, and ecological translation.Culture-loaded words are not isolated linguistic signals, but rather intertextual in nature.Intertextuality is the feature that a text reflects on other texts or on the text itself, and the feature is mirrored by intertextual signals existing in a certain recognizable language form in a text. Both culture-loaded words and translation activities are intertextual, but there is a real gap in the research on the translation of culture-loaded words from the perspective of intertextuality.Liu Zhenyun’s novel Wo Bu Shi Pan Jinlian has a large number of culture-loaded words, and after being translated by Sinologist Goldblatt, this book has attracted wide attention from Western readers, and the acceptability of Chinese literary works in the Western world has been on the rise. However, there are few studies on the English translation of this book.Taking Goldblatt’s English version of Wo Bu Shi Pan Jinlian as a case study, this thesis divides culture-loaded words into the following five categories: ecological culture-loaded words, material culture-loaded words, social culture-loaded words, religious culture-loaded words, and linguistic culture-loaded words according to Nida’s classification of culture.By analyzing 50 examples, this thesis demonstrates the intertextuality of culture-loaded words in the original text and the target text,as well as the role of intertextuality in the translation process. Finally,it sums up the translation strategies concerning culture-loaded words: literal translation, free translation, transliteration with annotation, amplification, substitution, and alliteration. In translating the five culture-loaded words, these six methods can not only reflect the intertextuality of the source language, but also construct the intertextuality of the target language. Moreover, this study suggests that the culture-loaded words and their intertextuality in the source language should be preserved and reproduced as much as possible in order to carry forward Chinese culture. To some extent, this study can inspire translators to pay more attention to the intertextuality of culture-loaded words in translation,so as to achieve better translation practice.
