This translation report is based on the project Research on Nuclear Waste Treatment("20LM0408"),which was commissioned by the Latin American Research Center of Southwest University of Science and Technology. The MTI Center of SWUST undertook the translation task. The theme of the project is the transportation of radioactive waste. The source material is an excerpt from the fourth meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s "Development in the Transport of Radioactive Waste-Proceedings of a Seminar Held in Vienna,21-25 February 1994".The translation material is a proceeding with scientific and technological language.According to Newmark’s translation theory, the text is an information one.In the process of translation, the author,in order to let the translated text conform to the Chinese expression habits and reading habits of Chinese readers, guided by Newmark’s communicative translation theory, analyzes the source text from two levels: lexis and syntax. At the lexical level, the author finds that there are many place names, professional terms and semi-professional terms in the raw materials. The author uses literal translation, transliteration, literal translation plus free translation and literal translation plus omission methods to translate them,so that the target language is concise and formal, while accurately expressing their meanings. At the syntactical level, the author discovers that there are many passive sentences, attributive clauses and nominal clauses in the source text.During the process of translating the sentences,in order to conform to the logic of the source sentences and highlight the informative function of the language in the information-based text, the author uses reconstruction, amplification, conversion and other methods.Literature shows that there are few translation reports on radioactive waste transportation conducted under the guidance of communicative translation theory at home. Therefore, the author completes the translation of the materials guided by Newmark’s communicative translation theory, hoping to provide other translators and research with experience in translating radioactive waste materials and useful resources.
