| With the rapid development of science and technology, our living environment which is increasingly horrendous has attracted more attention, since we have gradually realized it is important and necessary when safeguarding the future of humanity. The translation material of this translation report is selected from The Precipice: Existential Risk and the Future of Humanity, which introduces existential risks faced by human beings as well as provides actions and strategies we can take to protect humanity’s future, thus arousing readers’ attention to the survival and future development of human beings.Based on the translation practice of Chapters One to Three from The Precipice:Existential Risk and the Future of Humanity, the translation report focuses on the strategy of explicitation in E-C translation. In the process of translation, the translator can take some methods, such as the addition of linguistic and extra-linguistic information to get rid of the potential ambiguity in translation,so that the expression and the logic of the target text will become clear. On the basis of fully understanding the source text, the translation report studies the feasibility of explicitation in E-C translation from four aspects: grammatical structure, logical relationship, semantic meaning and cultural background, which are also four aspects involved in Klaudy’s classification of explicitation, and provides specific translation methods that can be adopted in making the translation explicit so as to better convey information in the source text as well as provide some references for the study of explicitation in E-C translation. The translation report consists of six chapters.Chapter 1 briefly introduces the source text and the significance of the translation project;Chapter 2 describes the translation process, which involves three phases: pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation;Chapter 3briefly introduces the definition of explicitation, and classifies it from four aspects:grammatical structure, logical relationship, semantic meaning and cultural background;Chapter 4 is the case analysis.Based on the classification of explicitation, this chapter analyzes various translation methods, including division, amplification, recasting, repetition, conversion, concretization and annotation, adopted in the translation practice;Chapter 5summarizes the major findings and limitations of the translation practice, with a view to providing some suggestions for the study of explicitation in E-C translation in the future. |
