A Translation Report Based On The MTPE Mode Of Provisions Explanation Of The Code For Design Of Foam Fire Extinguishing Systems（Excerpts）

This report is based on the adoption of machine translation plus post-editing mode.The source text is taken from the first two chapters of Provisions Explanation of the Code for Design of Foam Fire Extinguishing Systems.As a document authored by a Chinese company to aid Cambodia’s fire protection construction,it needs to be translated into English for reference by relevant Cambodian departments as their national standards.The project aims to improve the target readers’ understanding of fire-fighting information and provide possible translation strategies in the practice.The source text has features of accurate wording,rigorousness,and strong logicality,with plenty of numbers and tables,which is a typical informative text.To ensure translation quality,the author closely observes the fidelity rule and the readability rule in the post-editing process,based on Skopos theory.Following a comparison of the MT engines and PE tools,“Google Translate” was chosen as the MT engine and “Transmate” as the PE tool.Parallel texts are searched before embarking on post-editing,and a primary term bank is established according to the analysis of the parallel texts.The term bank is updated regularly during the process of post-editing to ensure the accuracy and consistency of words in the translation;at the sentential level,concrete procedures of PE include: modifying word order,simplifying long and difficult sentences,and changing the voice to improve the sentence readability;at the discourse level,making a fluent cohesion and coherence between sentences by adding or removing conjunctions,fixing ambiguous reference and other alterations to improve the discourse standardization of language expression and textual style integrity.While discussing translation strategies and techniques for fire-fighting texts,it is intended that this translation practice can also provide some guidance and reference for the construction of the fire-fighting field.
