A Translation Practice Report On Henry Wadsworth Longfellow（Chapter13-16）

This is a project report on the translation of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow from chapter13 to chapter 16,written by Thomas Wentworth Higginson.Higginson collected many manuscripts of Longfellow’s letters and theses,along with excerpts from his earlier works in the book,which recorded Longfellow’s childhood,youth,marriage,and four trips to Europe,as well as documented his academic career,professorship,stories of making friends through poetry,the desire for literary creation,and the development of lifelong writing.Thus,we get to know his lofty and wise thoughts,pure and elegant pursuit,concern for family members and love for a happy life.The original of this translation project belongs to biographical literature.The role of a translator in biographical translation is to understand the original correctly,and convey the spirit of it exactly so as to give better play to translator’s “intermediary” role.Hermeneutics re-examines the nature of translation and discusses the proposition that“translation is hermeneutic”.It emphasizes the translator’s subjectivity in understanding the source language as a information receiver during translating,and that the target language readers’ reaction should also be taken into account.Therefore,the translator deals with many problems from the perspective of hermeneutics,such as avoiding misunderstanding,does not translate word for word but focus on the transition of meaning,comprehend the source language and compensate the missing parts in the target language.In addition,apply the active role of understanding and interpretation rationally in cultural constructions like translation.This practice report is divided into four parts.The first part is the project introduction,which briefly introduces the source and significance of the project,as well as the structure of this report.The second part is the task description,which is mainly divided into pre-translation preparation,translation process and post-translation processing.The third part is cases analysis,which is the main body of this report.Apply specific translation theories to solve difficulties and problems encountered in translation practice.The fourth part is the conclusion of practice,introducing the enlightenment and experience that the author has gained as well as some problems to be solved in the future.
