A Translation Practice Report On Henry Wadsworth Longfellow（chapter 9-12）

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is a biography written by Thomas Wentworth Higginson.Longfellow was a famous romantic poet in the 19 th century.This biography provides a comprehensive account of Longfellow’s four visits to Europe and his growth and achievements in literary history.The author chooses four chapters of the biography as the original text of this English-Chinese translation practice,expecting that it can enrich the domestic understanding of Longfellow and further spread Longfellow’s literary thought.According to the analysis of the original text,it is clear that the book includes some letters and academic manuscripts in addition to biographical content,so it is no longer a single informative text,but also an expressive text and a vocative text.Peter Newmark’s text type theory points out that in the translation of expressive texts,the author of the original text should be put in the first place,and semantic translation can be mainly adopted.In the translation of informative and vocative text,readers’ feelings should be given priority,and communicative translation should be preferred.Based on the dual linguistic features of the texts,this translation practice takes semantic translation and communicative translation as the theoretical basis and strives to achieve the effect of both meaning and communication after repeated consideration and revision.The report is divided into four parts.The first part is the project introduction,which briefly introduces the text background,language features and report structure.The second part is the project task description,which broadly lists the author’s translation practice ideas and planning.The third part is a case study,which analyzes the specific application of the selected translation theory in terms of strategy selection with examples.The fourth part is the practice revelation,which roughly summarizes the author’s gains and reflections in the process of this practice.
