For the past few years, the progress of the global economy has met various challenges. The employment situation in various countries around the world is not optimistic, but there is more demand for professionals who are proficient in business. The paradox between the severe employment situation and the demand for business talents has greatly puzzled people majoring in business, and urges these people to find answers in guidance books of professional employment.Under such circumstances has the translation of relevant texts of the employment guide for business professionals come into being. Many related English books have been introduced into China and translated into Chinese to satisfy the needs from business majors and professionals, and some scholars have initiated studying the translation of career guidance texts, but few translators have personally carried out systematic discussions on the translation practice of employment guidance for business professionals. What Can You Do with a Major in Business is typical of such career guidance books, written in English by Kate Shoup Welsh. The book is very practical and highly readable and riches in business related professional knowledge and information, which makes it worth translating into Chinese but with great challenges to the translator’s knowledge and translation skills. This report straightens out the Chinese translation process of What Can You Do with a Major in Business and discusses the strategies and methods employed to tackle the key but difficult points which arose from the specific translation of the concerned book.At the same time this report attempts to explore the usefulness and importance of Skopos Theory to translating such guidance texts with strong features of informative and technical texts. This report analyzes the textual features of the guidance texts by adopting the theoretical connotation of Skopos theory to implement the principles of purpose, coherence, and loyalty. In other words,it combines Skopos theory into analyzing the specific examples taken from the concerned book and concludes with the principles applicable to the translation of guidance texts in two aspects: Word translation and sentence translation. The implication of this reports exists in that the translator must not stick to the literal correspondence between the two languages and instead s/he should make appropriate selection and adjustment according to the purpose of translation and the differences between Chinese and English so that the translation can influence the readers of the target language as what the source language does to its readers in order to eventually realize the purpose of promoting cultural exchanges across different languages.
