A Report On E-C Translation Of Science And Technology Column From The Economist

With the development of the international exchange,the scientific and technological sector has become an indispensable part of the country’s comprehensive strength.One of the most effective ways to follow the latest achievements and developments in the field of science and technology is to read reports,including newspapers,magazines,and other channels.The Economist is one of the most authoritative channels and the first choice for many scholars and experts to know the latest scientific and technological information.This report is based on the research and translation of the science and technology section of The Economist under the guidance of Relevance Theory.Articles were chosen from February to September in 2020,adding up to ten essays and covering medical,aerospace,and geographical fields.This report mainly focuses on two facets.The first aspect is the analysis of the characteristic of the source text.In terms of lexis,the source text uses large quantities of technical vocabularies,proper nouns,part of speech.It asks the translator to adopt correct translation methods under a different context.In terms of syntax,the source text consists of complicated and long clauses,passive voice,and special sentence structure,which needs the translator to be flexible when choosing translation methods.Concerning context,the source texts used idioms,the figure of speech,and other techniques with humorous style,so the translator must retain the original style.The second focus is to put relevance theory into practice from the following three parts.Firstly,ostensive-inferential translation asks the translator to have a thorough understanding of the source text and then create a cognitive environment through proper translation methods which include transliteration,negation,omission,amplification,and so on.Secondly,based on optimal relevance,the translator will deal with difficulties caused by cultural differences like idioms,the figure of speech,and background.The translator must follow the principle that the target readers can yield adequate contextual effects under proper processing efforts.Lastly,under the guidance of direct and indirect translation,the translator will retain as much as messages and styles of the source text while ensuring the translated texts are in accordance with the Chinese features.
