With the increasing communication between China and the rest of the world, large quantities of sci-tech articles are entering our country through the Internet in the course of globalization and the English-Chinese translation of these articles is in high demand. However, the study of E-C translation of sci-tech articles in China is not deep enough. What’s more, the E-C translation abilities of many translators are in need of improvement because standardized translation are seen in their translated texts. As a result, the intended receptor audience may find it difficult to get the exact meaning of the writer, which is not good for new technology to enter into China.Sci-tech articles have characteristics like scientificity, objectivity and logicality.Among all these features the greatest is scientificity with two points standing out: first, the translated texts should convey the information in the original texts;second, the language of translated text should be natural. The author, through the analysis of many sci-tech articles, holds the opinion that the translation of sci-tech articles can effectively be guided by Nida’s functional equivalence theory.Nida thought translation should be the closest natural equivalent of the source-language message in the target language.‘Closest’ means the message in the translated texts should be accurate, which conforms to the requirement of E-C translation of sci-tech articles.‘Natural equivalence’ means the translation should aim at target readers. If target readers’ reaction towards translated texts is consistent with that of source-text readers toward original texts,Nida thought the translation is successful, which also meet with this requirement. This paper includes the following parts.First, this paper introduced the major language features of scientific and technical text.Second, the development and connotation of function equivalence theory was introduced and the necessity and feasibility of function equivalence in guiding the E-C translation of sci-tech articles was discussed.Third,E-C translations of the sci-tech articles of the Economist selected from the internet was analyzed under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory from the perspective of lexis, syntax and discourse. This paper proves that functional equivalence is useful in guiding the translation of sci-tech articles.
