| Along with the new policy,new curriculum and new teaching materials,the newly-reformed College Entrance Examination has made new requirements for high school English teachers.In this context,teachers must consistently adapt themselves to the new policy,adjust their teaching methods and promote their own professional development.During this very process,class observation and assessment is undoubtedly the efficient avenue,which is also beneficial to realizing the reform in English classes.However,according to the current situation of high school English teachers’ class observation and assessment,there still remain lots of problems,thus needing further improvement so as to truly suit the needs of the newly-reformed College Entrance Examination.In this essay,the writer chose five high schools in Suzhou and carried out surveys and interviews,in order to find out the existing problems of high school English teachers’ class observation and assessment.Several problems have been found,which are listed as follows.When observing classes,high school English teachers tend to be lacking in preparation in advance,take notes casually during class and fail to focus on as many aspects as possible.When it comes to assessing the very class,it turns out that whole process is seldom carried out in a systematic way and teachers involved fail to pay attention to the students’ reaction in class.Also,their assessments usually lack professional perspectives,use some patterned words and omit certain key aspects,putting their emphasis on the minor points instead.All these problems are the existing barriers to the professional development of the high school English teachers.Based on the findings above,the writer put forward several concrete suggestions on solving the problem from three angles.From schools’ angle,they should perfect their existing system of teachers’ observing and assessing classes,making it diversified and profitable.Also,carrying out professional trainings is needed,with the help of theoretical learning.Besides,improving the standards of assessing classes matters too,in which the key competencies should be included.From the angle of teachers’ observing classes,teachers are advised to have the right attitude,make full preparations beforehand,take proper notes,focus on students’ performance and work with co-teachers cooperatively,so as to carry out efficient class observation.From the angle of teachers’ assessing classes,teachers should have deep thinking after observing a class and keep in mind the feature of English as a subject.Being equipped with basic educational theory,professional competence and awareness of the newly-reformed policy is also a must for all English teachers.Furthermore,while assessing a class,teachers should lay emphasis on teacher’s creativity during the class and always keep sensitive to any new reform in teaching.With all the findings mentioned above,high school teachers’ efficient class observation and assessment is there for the taking,which will possibly lead to the improvement of their comprehensive competences in the near future,thus improving the overall educating and teaching quality of the high school English teachers. |
