4D printing enables people to print products which can transform automatically. When it comes to the manufacturing sector, this technique not only contributes to the decline in costs and production of defective goods, but also promotes customization, automatic assembly as well as a streamlined production process.4D Printing: Industrial,Commercial and Social Changes in the Era of Intelligent Manufacturing lists positive effects of the technique on manufacturing and connects it with the fourth industrial revolution,“Internet plus” strategy, lifestyle reform and national rejuvenation. That is how the original text resonates with the strategy of invigorating the country through science, technology and education as well as the global trend of prioritizing science and innovation. This report studies the translation of excerpts from the first five chapters of the original book and explores the translation methods and techniques applicable to popular science texts. On the one hand, these texts feature scientific terms and professional knowledge while on the other, they need to meet the requirements of average readers. As such, the translator ought to strike a balance between preciseness and readability in order to ensure enjoyable reading experiences.During the translation process, efforts were made to reproduce the style of the original text on the basis of fidelity.Guided by the Skopos theory, and the three rules of skopos, coherence and fidelity, the report endeavors to cope with lexical, syntactic and textual difficulties in translation.1)Lexically,the translator adopts such translation techniques including annotation, addition, omission, change of parts of speech, etc.and makes effort to lay bare the underlying meaning of rhetorical devices so that the diction is precise and accessible.2)Syntactically,such techniques as changing voice, combining and dividing clauses are used to cater to English readers in terms of reading habits.3)Textually,cohesion and coherence achieved through the use of synonyms, antonyms, reference and substitution help to fulfill the purpose of propagating science in a reader-friendly way. With the analysis of translation difficulties and exploration of corresponding measures, the translator hopes that the report may provide valuable experience for future translation practice of similar texts.
