Killers of the King: The Men Who Dared to Execute Charles Ⅰ,one of the masterpieces written by the English writer Charles Spencer, gives an account of the lives of the lawyers and judges who sentenced Charles I to death. It reveals many details of the turbulent history of the House of Stuart before and after English Civil War(1642–1651),and praises the heroic deeds of daring to fight against the autocratic king and defending freedom and human rights. The introduction and translation of this book are of importance to the enrichment of historical book market in China and the exploration of translation methods of historical texts.Within the framework of text typology put forward by Katharina Reiss,a German translation theorist, this project report argues in detail that historical texts enjoy both historical significance and literariness, and that this book features both informative and expressive function, which is originated from the English-Chinese translation practice of Chapters 13 to 15.Based on the key and difficult points in translation at lexical, syntactic, rhetoric and discourse levels, and the analysis of their causes, this report puts forth corresponding solutions to deal with various translation issues. To be more specific, annotation can be used in the translation of proper nouns;inserting and dividing are recommended in the translation of long sentences;the passive voice(or passive structure)can be converted into the active,a subjectless sentence or kept unchanged;when translating figures of speech, the methods of literal translation and free translation can be adopted;as for discourse,it requires the translator to pay attention to text variety and grasp translation feature,so as to reproduce the style of original language. In a nutshell,it strives to make the translation meet the readers’ reading expectations and provide some suggestions for the reference of historical text translation.
