Under the background of rapid aging,an aging population has become one of the most serious challenges of the social development in our country.And the pension service demand also increases.In addition to traditional community endowment model and home-based care model,the demand for institutional pension also increased significantly.Nursing assistant of pension institutions is the main force of institutional pension services,which plays a vital role in promoting the construction of pension services in China.However,the nursing assistants in China’s pension institutions are faced with identification difficulties,which not only affects the operation of pension institutions,but also hinders the construction of China’s pension service system.Based on the consideration of the construction of professional self-identification of nursing assistants in pension institutions,this paper adopted the qualitative research method and selected three pension institutions of different nature in Yuzhong District of Chongqing as the research sites so as to explore the living situation,identity status,the construction logic of professional self-identification and the influencing factors of it.The above research questions were analyzed guided by Maslow’s Hierarchy of Need Theory,Self-identity Theory and Social Identity Theory as well as the field investigation results.The study found that the nursing assistants in pension institutions in China are hard to survive.The imbalance of the nursing assistant team is prominent,and they face the dilemma of multiple contradictory roles.However,the nursing assistants have constructed a medium-high professional self-identification under the circumstances of poor living conditions and low social external identity,which seems to be abnormal,but actually normal.The professional group of nursing assistants is at the bottom of the society,their social recognition degree is low,and they are at the risk of“stigmatization”,which are difficult to change through their own efforts.However,nursing assistants have the needs of self-worth and belonging.Though the external society cannot meet the needs of them,they construct a “defensive” professional selfidentification through a series of subjective actions,.The logic of the construction of“defensive” professional identification is: firstly,demand-oriented.When choosing a career,nursing assistants who are from the bottom of the society,have clear demand expression,which are mainly embodied in the aspects of the pursuit of wages and job security.So a low demand and immediacy are reflected on demand-oriented.The second is the auxiliary of support and access.The comprehensive support from the government,organizations and groups plays an auxiliary role in the construction of professional self-identification of nursing assistants in pension institutions,which ensures the smooth implementation of nursing assistants’ nursing work.The last is subjective-action driven.Nursing assistants in pension institutions break the control of central discourse and establish “defensive self-identity” by actively adjusting their psychology state,finding reference groups to form a contrast,and constructing the subject space.The obvious characteristics of “de-otherization” and “subjective action”in the construction process of “defensive” professional self-identification of nursing assistants are the manifestation of the active demand for self-value and belonging of the occupational group of them in the era of risk.However,the essence of the “defensive”professional self-identity is that the individual nursing nurse cannot obtain the sense of value and identity from the outside.And their professional self-identity are constructed by demand orientation,support acquisition and the logic of subject action under the demand of self-value and belonging.In the long run,their external identity cannot be improved,professionals into the old-age care industry will continue to decline,the willingness of professional talents entering the field of pension institution industry may become increasingly low,and the teams of nursing assistants can go into an endless cycle of self-defense,which hinder the construction of the nursing assistants in China and is not conducive to the normal development of the elderly service in China.Finally,the study analyzed the influencing factors of professional self-identity of nursing assistants from micro,middle and macro levels respectively.Besides,it put forward corresponding proposals from such three aspects as environmental layout,specific propulsion,logic realization by adhering to problem orientation and combined with empirical conclusions,which aimed at promoting the construction of professional self-identification of nursing assistants in our country,improving the quality of pension services and promoting the pace of the construction of the elderly service system.
