A Study On The Situation Of Chinese Verb Overlapping And Its Eventful Construal

Overlap is a common grammatical tool in some languages,and the problem of overlapping modern Chinese verbs has always attracted the attention of scholars.Under the guidance of event semantics theory,this paper attempts to take the verb overlap type marked "[overlapping]" in the Dictionary of Chinese Verb Usage as the main research object,observe the grammatical characteristics,semantic features,and pragmatic functions of verb overlaps,summarize the overlapping situation types,and study the conditions,motives and recognition mechanisms of verb overlap,on the basis of which the framework event types of verb overlapping sentences are summarized and the corresponding event diagrams are constructed.The full text consists of six chapters:Chapter One: The reasons and meanings of the topic selection,the research status,theoretical basis,research methods,research objects and corpus sources of verb overlap in this paper are explained.Chapter Two: The characteristics of verb overlapping grammar,semantics,and pragmatics are described.In terms of grammar,verb overlaps,like their base forms,can act as syntactic components such as predicates,subjects,objects,determinants,and adjectives.But the ability of verb overlaps to act as complements is relatively weak,and typical verb overlaps cannot be complements;verb overlaps cannot be combined with quantitative phrases and dynamic auxiliaries "zhe（着）,le（了）and guo（过）";verb overlaps for table state continuations usually do not have an object,and verb overlaps that indicate actions generally have an identifiable object or non-referential object.In terms of semantics,the verb overlap has semantic features such as [+action][+ fuzzy amount][+ repetition] [+ continuity] [+ subjectivity];from the perspective of the situation,the situation expressed by the verb overlap can be divided into a situation of reaching a situation,a continuous situation and a repetitive situation.In terms of pragmatics,verb overlap has pragmatic functions such as emphasizing movements,highlighting oneself,and soothing tone.Chapter Three: The lexical and grammatical features of verb overlap are analyzed.Referring to the classification of verb basic forms by scholars,the verb overlapping forms are divided into active verb overlap and achievement type verb overlap,and the characteristics of these two types of overlapping forms are analyzed.Overlapping is a grammatical means that the overlapping form produces grammatical characteristics that the base form does not have,and the grammatical body features of the verb overlap form behave as the verb overlap has integrity.Chapter Four: The conditions,motives,and mechanisms of recognition of verb overlap are analyzed.The first condition for verb overlap is semantic conditioning,and we observe that verb primitives that can overlap and verb overlap have the same semantic characteristics: [+ action] and [+ continuation].The motivation of verb overlap includes two aspects: cognitive motivation and psychological motivation,cognitive motivation mainly refers to image similarity,and psychological motivation is manifested as the speaker’s subjective "pairing" and "soothing,euphemistic" psychology.The mechanism of recognition of verb overlap is the sequential scanning,through which people decompose an integrity event into a series of small events for recognition.Chapter Five: After analyzing the event elements of verb overlapping sentences,the three types of framework events of simple verb overlapping sentences are summarized,and the framework event diagram is constructed.Verb overlap has the function of anchoring events and portraying events,and is an element of behavior in an event,and the elements of the event such as acting,receiving,time,and frequency will exert influence on the event.From simple verb overlapping sentences,the three types of framework events of motion,state change and implementation events can be summarized,and the event diagrams of these three types of framework events are constructed on this basis.Chapter Six: The research results in the first five chapters of this paper are collated,and the shortcomings of this study are reflected.
