As the earliest poetry collection in China,The Book of Songs holds a high status and has far-reaching impact on the history of Chinese literature.Images with plentiful cultural connotations play an essential part in this book,which not only embodies profound Chinese literature but also provides a valuable reference for poetry creation for the later generations.In addition,translation methods and effects of images have direct effects on the reproduction of emotion in poems.Plant images in The Book of Songs are rich in both quantity and variety,which comes to the focus and difficulty in translation.Sorting out translation methods of plant in the Russian version of The Book of Songs translated by Abramenko(hereinafter referred to as A’s version),this thesis attempts to analyze the translation effect of plant images based on the relevance theory,thus making active explorations into the translation field of The Book of Songs.The thesis consists of four chapters as follows.Chapter One introduces research background and significance of the Russian translation of plant images in The Book of Songs,literature review at home and abroad,the further development trend,the focus and difficulty of this study,research methods,etc.Chapter Two is an overview of image theory and relevance theory.The thesis will present definitions of Chinese and Western image theories and significance of image in poetry creation and poetry translation.Then the background of relevance theory will be elaborated,including its theoretical connotation and related translation methods.Chapter Three comes to a summary of the symbolic meanings of plant images in A’s version and seven translation methods,such as literal translation,substitution and free translation through analysis with figures and examples.Chapter Four elaborates analysis of translation effect of plant images in A’s version based on relevance theory,mainly including four effects,such as the coexistence of both “meaning” and “image”,the loss of “image”,the loss of “meaning”,and losses of both “meaning”and “image”.The analysis of translation methods of plant images in the Russian version of The Books of Songs could enlarge the achievements of domestic studies on Russian version of it,deepen the research on relevance theory and enhance the cognition of lexicology and linguistics,thus providing a reference for Russian translation teaching and further Russian translation of The Book of Songs.
