Abstract/Summary:
This report is on the basis of the translation of Part I of the book Thinking About Nuclear Weapons—Principles,Problems,Prospects, written by Michael Quinlan, who has worked for more than 40 years in framing policy about nuclear weapons.Quinlan discussed NATO’s nuclear policies, the strategic function of nuclear weapons and the nuclear non-proliferation issues in the book. One prominent feature of the source text is the existence of abundant and diversified parentheses, which will affect the fluency and expression of the target language if not translated with feasible methods. This feature makes it necessary to pay more efforts on analyzing the parenthetical parts in the ST and finding some ways to translate them with idiomatic Chinese expressions.Through analyzing the translation methods of translating parenthesis from English to Chinese in relevant papers and the case analysis of the excerpt,it is found that five translation methods, namely amplification, linear translation, reconstruction, translating with other marks and splitting can be used while translating parentheses from English to Chinese.According to different circumstances, reconstruction, translating with other marks and splitting can be subdivided to make the classification more logical comprehensive. Here are two principles of choosing feasible methods used in this report:1.The sense and logic of ST can be well secured and the expression of TT should be in accordance with idiomatic Chinese expression;2.the function of the parenthetical part of ST should not be damaged. The functions of parenthesis adopted in this report are:logical connection, modal adjuncts, giving more information and identifying the source of relevant information. The methodology used here is case study.Several examples are selected from the excerpt to discuss the feasibility, suitable situation and limits of each method in the case analysis part. Some methods are used together while translating one ST with several parentheses and some STs can be addressed with more than one method.
