Translation is a process from the understanding of the original text to the reproduction of the translated text, and it is also a process of finding and solving problems. This translation report focuses on the study of parentheses' translation methods for the sake of the semantic coherence as a whole, and makes an in-depth analysis of the author's translation experience in the process of translating Swimming Home. This paper consists of four parts: task description, task process, case study and conclusions. The first part briefly introduces Deborah Levy, the author of the novel, the work, and features of the source text and the significance of this task. The second part is the translation process.First of all,it introduces the preparatory work before translation, including the preparation of relevant reviews of the novel, the reading of the novel and the preparation of translation tools.Secondly, after all the preparatory work has been completed,a more systematic timetable has been drawn up and the tasks have been completed strictly in accordance with it.Later, the researcher realizes that the biggest challenge in translating the work is the translation of a large number of parentheses in the novel. After the completion of the translation,a number of orderly corrections are made. The third part is the case study, which is about how to translate the parentheses into Chinese in order to achieve a semantic coherent target text. This section is devoted to the introduction to parentheses, concepts of cohesion and coherence and the specific analysis of the translation of the three types of parentheses in the source text for the purpose of semantic coherence, namely, appositives as parentheses, adverbials as parentheses and attributives as parentheses. The fourth part summarizes the author's achievements throughout this translation practice and reflects on the translation difficulties that have not yet been solved.
