Research On The Preparation Of The Cultural Project Of Thomas Francis Wade’s The HSIN CHING LU

The Search for The Hsin Ching Lu was written by the nineteenth century British diplomat Thomas Francis Wade,and its main audience was specialized interpreting officials.In addition to being a Chinese language textbook,it is also a historical and cultural book.It contains a detailed account of the local folk customs and spoken Beijing dialect in the mid-nineteenth century.A large number of cultural items with traditional culture and folk customs are selected as the corpus of the textbook,and the corpus is arranged in a reasonable way so that learners can have a more comprehensive understanding of Beijing folk customs and traditional Confucian culture,and to a certain extent,spread Chinese culture.This paper analyzes and organizes the content and arrangement characteristics of the cultural items in the textbook,and analyzes the value that can be drawn from them.This paper finds that an exploration of the cultural items in The Hsin Ching Lu can be divided into the following research perspectives.My research viewpoint one is to categorise the cultural items in the first part of the Chinese book the T’ien Lei.After reading and classifying the books,the cultural items in this book are divided into several types of cultural items,including weather phenomena,astronomical phenomena,festivals,folk beliefs,religious deities,Chinese worship,the distinction between good and evil deities,and big and small deities.The study also analyses the tendency of the English translation.The second point of view of the study is to analyse the culture in the second part of the Chinese volume of The Hsin Ching Lu,and to collate and illustrate the folkways and cultures involved in the English translation of the two parts of the Commentary on the T’ien Lei and the Sheng Yu Kuang Hsün.As a result of this study,the main Confucian culture of filial piety and fraternal duty,as well as the expressions and understanding of some cultural words in the author’s commentary,are summarised in the section of The Great Scripture.The third point of view of the study is that,based on the summary of the contents of the first two chapters,the cultural elements in the first two volumes of The Hsin Ching Lu are classified and thus analysed in comparison with the types of cultural items in The Yü-yen Tzu-erh Chi,and the characteristics of the selection and arrangement of cultural items in The Hsin Ching Lu are sorted out and summarised.Finally,through the discussion of the above chapters,the practical value of The Hsin Ching Lu is summarised,and the implications for the development of contemporary specialized Chinese language textbooks and the study of ephemeral culture are suggested.
