Be the first of a series of contributions to the study of Chinese, the HsinChin Lu, one of the important works of British missionary Thomas Francis Wade has avaluable material recording Peking dialect in the mid-19th century. It has great value forstudying Peking dialect in that time.This paper can be divided into five parts.The first part gives an introduction to the life of Wade, the process of writting theHsin Chin Lu and the significance to do this study.The second part introduces the style of the Hsin Chin Lu by examples.The third part is the hardest part in this paper--translating the English text intoChinese text in the first part of the book.The forth part is the most important and most innovative part. In the foundation ofthe Chinese text, we can get the point that this book is quite special because of thespecial users, materials and teaching arrangement. And then summarized folk-customsin Beijing, the features of Peking dialect and westerners’ Chinese acquisition concept inthe mid-19th century. It also can gives us a lot of enlightenment in today’s on teachingChinese and writing Chinese books. What’s more, under the careful reading of the HsinChin Lu, we have found some mistaken which made by Thomas Francis Wade in thisbook.The last part is the conclusion.
