Explicitation refers to clarifying into the TT what is implicit in the ST.Its nature and motivation have been studied a lot.Previous research focused on explicitation in simultaneous interpreting(SI),while studies on consecutive interpreting(CI)mainly compared the phenomena and strategies displayed by professionals and trainees.Few scholars studied explicitation among interpreting trainees in English-Chinese and Chinese-English CI.This thesis aims to examine explicitation in CI among interpreting trainees. The frequency and characteristics of explicitation in different language directions are also analyzed.Based on the typology framework established by Tang Fang in 2018,the author divides explicitation into three types:experiential explicitation, interpersonal explicitation, and textual explicitation, each with its sub-types.The study involves 8 graduate students from SEIS,BFSU.The materials are from CATTI level 2 consecutive interpreting test. After transcribing their TT,the author has counted the number of occurrences of each explicitation type and concluded their characteristics. The study finds out that explicitation occurs more frequently in English-Chinese CI than in the other direction among interpreting trainees.Among all the cases, textual explicitation occurs most frequently, which is concerned with adding or substituting pro-forms and connectives. It is followed by interpersonal explicitation and experiential explicitation.Interpersonal explicitation is concerned with clarifying the speaker’s position and attitude.Experiential explicitation appears in the form of adding or substituting processes and circumstantial adjuncts. In English-Chinese CI,textual explicitation occurs most frequently, followed by experiential explicitation and interpersonal explicitation. In Chinese-English CI,textual explicitation also occurs most frequently, followed by interpersonal explicitation and experiential explicitation. This study enriches the research on explicitation in CI.
