A Study On Back Translation In The E-C Translation Of Historical Materials

This translation practice report is intended to objectively and fairly reproduce the crimes committed during the Japanese invasion of China through the translation of the historical materials on the Nanjing Massacre and to reveal the truth of history so that more people can understand the truth of the Nanjing Massacre and objectively evaluate the significance of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression to the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War.From a third-party perspective,The Nanjing Atrocities:Crimes of War,a book compiled by Facing History And Ourselves(FHAO),a non-profit international education organization in the United States,records the historical background before the massacre,the real situation when it happened and the social impact after the tragedy with a view to shedding light on the historical truth of the Nanjing Massacre objectively and fairly.The book cites the testimonies of the survivors of the Nanjing Massacre,the diaries and family letters of the expatriates who stayed behind in Nanjing to shelter the Chinese refugees during the Nanjing Massacre,and the war diaries of the Japanese soldiers,hence a large number of proper nouns and words related to specific historical background.This article aims to discuss how to properly backtranslate these special words to ensure that the translated version is as accurate and authentic as possible so as to objectively reproduce the historical truth.This translation practice report is divided into five parts.Chapter Ⅰ briefly summarizes the research background,overview and significance of the translation project.Chapter Ⅱdescribes the translation process,including pre-translation preparation,the translation process during which the historical background is verified,the problems are summarized and the solutions are proposed,and the post-translation modification and revision.Chapter Ⅲelaborates on the theory of back translation.Chapter Ⅳ makes exemplifications based on the theory of back translation and explains how to analyze and summarize the translation process through the use of back translation strategies.Chapter V summarizes the significance of the translation practice and points out the limitations.
