A Study Of E-C Translation Of Literary Criticism Text From The Perspective Of Catford’s Translation Shift Theory

This thesis is a translation practice report.The translation material is Hawthorne and His Moss（1850）,the only literary criticism of Herman Melville.This is an untypical literary criticism,without logical analysis combined with literary theory.It mainly praises Hawthorne’s sensibility and resonates with the“power of blackness”implied in his works.This article,with beautiful language,concise words and profound meaning,uses a lot of rhetoric and inversion expression,criticizes American writers’blindly imitating European literature,and calls for the birth of national literature.This translation practice report explores the guiding role of Catford’s Translation Shift Theory in Chinese translation of literary criticism texts from two aspects:level shifts and category shifts.The author discusses the application of level shifts from the micro level,including vocabularies and grammar in order to achieve the formal correspondence between languages.In terms of category shifts,it is divided into four aspects in detail,namely,structural shifts,class shifts,unit shifts and intra-system shifts.The author makes a multi-angle and multi-level analysis of the translation based on the translation shifts,which involves vocabulary,sentence,language and other aspects,and it is illustrated with examples.Based on the study above,the author believes that Catford’s Translation Shift Theory provides effective guidance for the translation of literary criticism texts.Through various shifts,the author cannot only ensure the accuracy of the translation,but also ensure the logicality of structure and the beauty of language.In addition,the translation of Hawthorne and His Moss can also enhance the domestic readers’understanding of Melville,and provide some help for the study of Melville’s writing style,the communication between Melville and Hawthorne,and even the study of American Literature in the 19^th century.
