| With the development of globalization,exchanges among peoples have become more and more frequently,besides various cultures among countries have become increasingly close-linked.Proposing “Going Global” strategy,traditional Chinese culture is also approaching the world.Tang poetry,containing rich connotations of ancient Chinese culture,is the most worthwhile work for us to study.Bai Juyi was the poet of Tang Dynasty who had the highest reputation among the folk.His poems are easy to understand and are often adapted into songs.Its rich cultural connotations and simple statements reflect the real situation of the life era at that time.Many scholars have explored and studied Bai’s poetry,mostly from the living conditions described in his poetry,or from the images in poetry.While there are few in-depth analyses of the cultural connotations in Bai’s narrative poems.Translation now assumes its important role.Since the development of linguistics and translation theory,there has been a“Cultural Turn” in translation research.Translation is no longer regarded as merely a literal transformation between words and phrases,but more importantly,it aims to explore the cultural connotations contained in the language that is conveyed by different countries.In China,professor Liu Miqing’s study of cultural translation,An Outline of Cultural Translation,is the most prominent one,which is a landmark research work in the history of Chinese cultural translation.It mainly explores systematically from the four core topics of cultural translation,including semantic cultural interpretation,cultural interpretation of text,expressionism of cultural translation and translation in cultural psychological exploration.At the same time,he also gives his own insights and methods on how to translate culturally.This is a great complement and reference for the development of world’s cultural translation.This study is conducted by making a comparative analysis of the narrative poems Chang Hen Ge and Pi Pa Xing translated by different translators with the use of Liu’s cultural translation theory,so as to show that translating from the perspective of cultural translation will be more acceptable to target readers.In order to better present the cultural connotation of the source text to target readers,this thesis will summarize the corresponding translation strategies by comparing the translations of different translators to highlight the advantages of cultural translation theory.The research mainly divides the images and other contents of the two poems into three aspects(material stratum,social stratum and mental stratum),adopting Liu’s principle of cultural adaptability,principle of science and aesthetics as the theoretical support and proposing corresponding translation strategies in different aspects,which aims to show the importance of cultural translation theory in ancient poetry’s translation.For material stratum,cultural transplanting and cultural borrowing are used to show how we can observe the core cultural meaning of the source text;for social stratum,it is helpful to get the hidden cultural information in the source text by the use of cultural substitution and compensation of the cultural default;for mental stratum,owing to its specific features that can be varied from person to person,its unique style in philosophy and different modes of cultural expression are necessary to be taken into account.Through selecting correspondent sentences in Chang Hen Ge and Pi Pa Xing and using appropriate methods to expound how to transfer the cultural meaning in source text,which can provide a better way for us to explore the connotation meaning in the text.The research has found that translating poetry is not on the literal meaning but the background and hidden information contained in it with the application of cultural translation theory.Poetry is a literary work of special genre.The poet tends to express his true emotion through subjective images with Chinese characteristics.Therefore,only by excavating the cultural connotation of the source text can we express it accurately into target language;besides,the acceptance of target readers is the reference point in cultural translation.Cultural translation theory is not only the transformation of information between words and words,but also the transformation of cultural information between two different languages.In the process of cultural translation,we should follow the principle of cultural adaptability,principle of science and aesthetics,so as to display the original cultural information while maintaining the characteristics of the source text.Through analyzing different translators’ works,it is found that each translator translates Bai’s narrative poems from different aspects,while each of them presents translation in different writing styles and language styles.By comparing different translators’ translation dimension and cultural translation theory,it is easy to find that each translator lacks the analysis of the source text and the exploration of cultural information through translating more or less.What’s more,they may not take the acceptance of the target readers into account in the process of translation to some extent.Providing that the cultural translation theory can be applied in perfecting their translations,their translations would be more perfect.Poetry,as the most precious cultural creation in Chinese traditional culture,contains rich cultural connotations.In order to better integrate with the international community and carry out intercultural communication,we must make a good job of cultural communication—— the most difficult part of which is hard for other countries to understand.Therefore,we should use the local culture translation theory,which is more familiar with our national conditions,to analyze and narrate our own culture natively.The author tries to study the different translations of Bai’s narrative poems with this theory in order to provide scientific guidance and useful reference for future poetry translation. |
