As for English learning at the junior high school level, students need to master four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.Among these four basic skills, writing,as an expression skill,is a challenge for both teachers’ teaching and students’ learning. It requires students not only to have a solid background knowledge of language, but also to express their own ideas by means of proper use of language. Therefore, writing is an effective method to examine students’ comprehensive English language proficiency.Although more and more attention has been paid to writing in junior high school English teaching, investigations have found that students always have various problems in their writing, such as incorrect spelling of words, ambiguous sentences, vacuous expressions, incoherent organization and so on.In order to improve students’ writing ability, the front-line teachers have made great efforts in teaching, but the results are not satisfactory.Language teaching researchers have also been paying attention to the errors in students’ English writing, but the actual effect is not ideal either.Based on the error analysis theory, interlanguage theory and language transfer theory, this study aims to analyze the errors in junior high school English writings with the help of the Pigai System, explore the causes of these errors and put forward some corresponding teaching suggestions to improve students’ English writing ability. This paper takes 600 junior high school English final test essays as the research object, forming a self-built small written English corpus of junior high school English learners.Together with the Pigai System, questionnaire surveys and interviews are used to collect, classify, and analyze the errors in the sample essays. This paper aims to explore three questions: first, what are the main types of errors in the writing samples of the three grades;second, what are the differences in the writing errors of different grades;third, what are the causes of writing errors? The research results show the total number of 14 types of errors are found in the collected texts. These types of errors will be reclassified into three major categories: local errors, global errors and other errors. The number of local errors is higher than that of global ones. The main subtypes of errors in the three grades are sentence component errors, verb errors, and spelling errors. The writing differences of the three grades are mainly reflected in the different trends of the same error subtype in different grades. The main causes of errors are interlingual transfer and intralingual transfer. In addition, students’ writing attitudes and habits, and teachers’ teaching strategies are also important factors that cause students’ writing errors.Through the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, this study analyzes the types, differences and causes of errors in junior high school students’ English writing. The teaching enlightenment is that in teaching, teachers train students scientifically, students consciously expand the input and output of language, then the errors in writing will gradually reduce, and writing ability will gradually improve. Finally, based on the findings, the author puts forward some corresponding improvement suggestions for teachers’ teaching and students’ learning, and make some reflections on some of the deficiencies of this research. |
