As the basic skill of language learning,writing can reflect students’ comprehensive language ability.Writing becomes the focus and difficulty of junior high school English teaching.Verbs are important syntactic components of English sentences,but the study found that verb errors occur frequently in students’ writing.The study of verb errors is of significance to the English writing teaching.Therefore,this study focuses on the research and analysis of the verb errors in students’ English writing to promote the English writing teaching and improve students’ English writing ability in junior high school.Guided by error analysis theory and concept transfer theory,this study follows the steps to sample,classify and analyze the verb errors.It mainly answers the following two questions:(1)What types of verb errors occur in junior high school students’ English writing? How are these error types distributed?(2)What are the reasons for the verb errors in junior high school students’ English writing?With the help of the Ant Conc4.1.4w and the interview outline,this study conducted a corpus of 300 exam compositions of Grade 8 from a junior high school in Xintai City.The verb errors in the compositions were analyzed and discussed through interviews with teachers and students.The analysis is based on the classification of verb errors in the Chinese Learner English Corpus.The results show that:(1)The types of verb errors in junior high school students’ English writing are: subject-predicate agreement errors,collocation errors,non-finite errors,tense errors,finite errors,modal verb errors and voice errors.Among them,subject-predicate agreement error is the most and voice error is the least.(2)There are three main reasons of verb errors in junior high school students’ English writing: interlingual transfer,intralingual transfer and psychological factors.Based on the results of the data and the analysis of the reasons,the study puts forward some suggestions for the teaching and learning of English writing. |
