Creative treason, because of translators’ deviation from original texts and their creation in translation to some extent, has been in disputein literary translation. But the specific characteristics of literary translation and its nature of recreation determine the necessity and importance of creative treason in the process of translation.Manipulation theory proposes that translation is writing of the source texts under the influence of complicated manipulative factors. With a dynamic research, it places translated texts within a social and cultural system in the target language to explore the social, political and cultural factors which affect translators’ manipulation to original texts. So, it can provide a brand-new perspective and solid theoretical basis to analyze the complicated factors behind the creative treason and translators’ intentions in literary translation. Therefore, this paper, with manipulation theory as a cornerstone and by the main research methods of descriptive case studyand comparative study, compares the original poems with the translated poems in Cathay and points out that the creative treason in Cathay is Pound’s inevitablechoiceunder the influence of ideology and poetics from three levels respectively. At the same time, creative treason in Cathay not only promotes the acceptance and spread of translated poems in target language, but also plays an important role in the spread of source language culture. Through this paper, we will also have a comprehensive understanding on the effect of ideology and poetics on creative treason, and know more about the values and deficiencies of creative treason in literary translation, such as enrichment of culture and literary system of target language, augment of values of translated version, and distortion of source texts and loss of cultural information.
