A Study On Creative Treason In Lin Yutang’s English Version Of Quiet Dream Shadows From The Perspective Of The Manipulation Theory

Translation is a complex social activity featured by being cross-culture,cross-language and cross time and space.In this complex activity,the translator as the first participant,is undoubtedly in a dominant position.In literary translation,the translator’s subjectivity is more prominent.They should not only faithfully reproduce the original information,but also try to create their own translation style.Therefore,it is especially important to study the translator’s creative treason in the context of the cultural turn.As a renowned international linguistic and cultural master,Lin Yutang has always taken faithfulness as the primary principle in translation practice.His translation of Quiet Dream Shadows written by Qing scholar Zhang Chao has received a wide range of attention upon publication.However,when reading his English version of Quiet Dream Shadows,it can be found that though advocating being faithful to the original,Lin Yutang has also made a lot of individual interpretation,which inevitably leads to translators’ creative treason.With the help of the two elements of ideology and poetics in the manipulation theory,and through the descriptive research method,this paper analyzes how Lin Yutang is influenced by ideology and poetics of his time from three aspects separately,leading to the use of addition,omission,annotation,substitution and other creative treason practices in the translation of Quiet Dream Shadows.By analyzing the social background of Lin’s time,the translation purpose and translation strategy,it is pointed out that Lin Yutang’s creative treason in the translation of Quiet Dream Shadows is reasonable and indispensable.At the same time,through the study and analysis of this paper,it can be drawn that the translator’s creative treason is not arbitrary,but to be restricted by the translator and the external conditions such as ideology and Poetics.Hopefully that this thesis can make a reasonable explanation about the creativetreason phenomenon in literary translation and more researches in this area will be expected and focused.
