A Spatial Study On The Love Of A Good Woman Of Alice Munro

Alice Munro(1931——)is the author who won the Nobel Prize in 2013 for her short stories.For Munro,fiction shows not how things happens,but the way they happen.And the way they happen often with a secret involvement of a man who experienced leaping time and space.The object of this paper is the Love of a Good Woman,a short story collection which won the Giller Literature Prize.This paper takes A Spatial Study on Stories of Alice Munro’s the Love of a Good Woman as the title.Doing the research about Munro’s novels under the western space theories as well as using eight of these stories as the research objects and combining the space theories which develop in domestic society.This paper consists of an introduction,three chapters and a conclusion.The first part is the introduction,which briefly introduce the life of Alice Munro,presents the research status of Alice Munro at home and abroad,discusses the development of spatial theory,and the research significance and methods of this paper.The second part is the presentation of private space in the collection.It includes the house,the kitchen,the lobby and the bughouse.The whole house represents the violence of the man.The kitchen and the lobby are the place that men oppress women in physiology and psychology.And the particular space is the bughouse,it’s a place which contains unusual people.In this part,it will be a harmful place to women.The third part is the presentation of public space in the Love of a Good Woman.It analyzes kinds of women’s relatives with the public space,including the town,the beach,the island and the streets.The town ask women to sacrifice their jobs and be an angle of house;beach is the place that women can express their feelings freely;the island is the way to escape the reality and the streets are the place they can be anyone they want.The fourth part will show the real relatives between people who lived in kinds of flow spaces and flow space itself.Flow spaces consist of the basement,the trailer,the motel and the holiday house in the central of cornfield.The basement tells truth why traditional women oppress new women;the trailer describes the rules under abnormal relationships between man and woman;the motel shows the reasons women escape from her family and the holiday house means an old woman’s loneliness and regrets.The presentation of various spaces make Alice Munro’s novels have its unique significance in theme.On the foundation of reading in detail of The Love of a Good Woman,this paper will help readers learn the relatives between space and women,and the real meanings under these paces based on public space,private space and flow space.
