The Study Of Kendall Walton’s Fictional Theory

The study of fiction has been prevalent for thousands of years in western history.It is not difficult to find that the pursuit of "fiction representation art" has been consistent with and guiding reality for a long time.On the basis of inheriting the fiction view in the history of western literary theory,Kendall Walton tries to solve the problem of "how fiction is true" by combining the imitative theory,artistic reality view and fiction view which has been enduring in western history.More importantly,Walton attaches great importance to the role played by the receiving subject in the theory of fiction.Therefore,Walton’s theoretical framework of fiction is quite large,which not only includes the world,works and authors that scholars have attached great importance to in the past,but also regards readers as the most important factor connecting the whole theoretical framework of fiction.Walton’s fiction theory to accept main body Angle as a starting point,from the reappearance of the essence of arts fiction,rules,path three aspects of his "how fiction is true" the answer of the problem,not only discussed the relationship between imagination and fiction,also the system examines the fiction from what generation,the problem of how to generate,summarize and put forward the theory of fictional generative mechanism and make-believe game.This paper is mainly divided into three parts:The first part is the introduction,which mainly introduces the relevant information of Walton,sorts out the domestic and foreign research status of Walton’s theory,and summarizes the research significance and value of this paper.The second part is the introduction and research of Walton’s theory of fiction in chapters one to four.The first chapter traces the development history of fiction theory and the foundation of Walton’s theory,mainly from three aspects: fiction view,reception theory and analytical philosophy in western history.Two to four chapters according to Walton’s own reports about his theoretical framework to summarize its three key of fictional theory.They are the imagination in chapter two,the generation mechanism in chapter three and the make-believe game in chapter four.The imagination is the essence of Walton fiction theory,generation mechanism is the rule for creating fictional,make-believe game is fictional generated path.The third part is the fifth chapter.The fifth chapter compares Walton’s theory of fiction with Goodman’s theory of reproduction,the subject dimension of Walton’s theory of fiction and the role of reader in the theory of reception.And summarizes Walton’s theoretical contribution to the subjectivity and scientization of fictional theory,as well as the comprehensive characteristics of Walton’s theory.
