A Report On E-C Translation Of Dragon’s War(Excerpts)

The source language text used in this translation practice report is excerpted from chapters 1 to 8 in Dragon’s War,a science fiction in English.The science fiction has compact plots and rich dialogues and characters’ monologues.Based on artificial intelligence,the author Vered Ehsani tells a story of the hero Myth saving another hero Dragon to stop a world war and save mankind.Although science fiction has developed rapidly in recent years,it is still lack of translation research,especially in the translation of excellent small number of science fiction literature works.In order to enrich the materials of Chinese science fiction and provide reference for the translation of small number of science fiction,the translator chooses this science fiction for translation practice research.The guiding theory adopted in this translation practice is semantic translation and communicative translation theory.Under the guidance of this theory,the author analyzes the translation practice and achieves accurate and concise translation according to the specific translation needs and context.Based on the characteristics of the source language,this paper mainly analyzes vocabulary and sentence from three aspects: lexical level,syntactic level and discourse level.Finally,the report concludes that in translation of the science fiction neologism,the translator mainly uses free translation;in translation of science fiction terms,the translating methods like adding footnotes,borrowing translation can be used;in translation of the monologues of the characters,the translator can use division,amplification,borrowing translation methods and literal translation and also should pay attention to the hidden emotion;in translation of the portrait description of the characters,the translator mainly uses free translation and division to translate;in translation of the dialogues,the translator can use the translating methods like division,reversed translation and translating in sequence,and free translation and domestication.The translation report consists of five chapters.Chapter one elaborates the background,significance of the translation task and the structure of the report.Chapter two illustrates the preparations before translation,the problems encountered in translation and the reviews after translation.The third chapter introduces the guiding theory used in this report and its guiding significance to the novel.Chapter four analyzes the translation cases from lexical level,syntactic level and discourse level.Chapter five summarizes the translator’s gains,limitations and the plans for the follow-up study.Due to lack of experience,the translator did not fully present the science fiction world created by the original text in translation,but through the translation of these cases,the translator gets the following inspiration:(1)The translator should not only respect the commonness of science fiction,but also not ignore its individuality;(2)The translator should learn from the translation terms of science fiction in the past to deepen the readers’ reading experience;(3)Curiosity and interest are important factors in the successful translation of science fiction.
