Since the 20th century,with the prevalence of consumerism and the development of science and technology,neon as a finished product or symbol has stepped onto the stage of contemporary art,and the exquisite color of neon also makes it unique among many art works.First of all,this paper summarizes the changes in the way of viewing in the category of fine arts since the 20 th century,and the mechanism system of image meaning has begun to be questioned.Artists also need to rethink the meaning and value of artistic creation in combination with philosophy,sociology,anthropology,economics and other disciplines.Situationism is a critique of capitalism based on Marxism and surrealism,hoping to break the gap between artists and consumers and make art a part of everyday life.At the same time,human beings entered the post-industrial civilization era,and science and technology gradually occupied the dominant position of social development.We can’t deny that the relationship between art and technology is becoming more and more close,interwoven and developing together.In this,as a product of consumerism and technology,neon light slowly ascended to the stage of art.Then,with neon lights,in many of the art as a medium or material according to the linguistic features and different method of production,can be roughly divided into two categories: one is to use neon is finished as a comprehensive materials to works,such as the concept art father Joseph secco seuss(Joseph Kosuth)of a series of works,the neon tube combined with text,cartoons,etc,appear on the glass or wall;Or a neon installation,like the British artist Cerith Wyn Evans,which uses the flexible material of a neon tube as a tool for painting and writing,to create work in space.Secondly,using the neon lights in the painting language of works,such as Edward Hopper(Edward Hopper),cleverly select neon type for scene atmosphere rendering,lighting or chang-ming wang,such as Chinese contemporary artists in traditional graphic works with Chinese color to join the neon lights,form the collision of traditional aesthetics and modern science and technology.Secondly,we know that people have been pursuing the expression of light in their works since the Western Classicism period.With the development and progress of science and technology,"light" can begin to appear as an independent readymade product.However,artists have keenly grasped this shift and flexibly put "light" into their creations.As a kind of "light",neon has played its unique role in the pop art under consumerism and the immersive art which is more popular now.In the end,the existence of these artists and works of art also gives me a lot of inspiration and thinking in the process of creation,and adds more possibilities to my own process and method of creation.
