The exhibition "Magiciens De La Terre" held by Jean Hubert Martin in 1989 is considered to be the first global contemporary art exhibition practice,showing the works of 50 Western and 50 non-Western artists.Since the opening,most of the art reviews related to the exhibition have been mainly published in French and British journals and newspapers,and the reviews of the exhibition have been mixed.Starting from the background of the exhibition,this article first discusses the social,cultural and artistic background of the exhibition.Then study Mardan’s exhibition plan,sort out the institutional background and spatial layout of the Pompidou Center and La Villette Center as exhibition venues;restore the historical investigation process of the exhibition ethnography;introduce the artist’s exhibition site and location distribution to grasp The arrangement and characteristics of the entire exhibition.The critical texts of the "Magiciens" from 1989 to the present are the basis of this article.By summarizing the relevant criticisms after the opening of the exhibition and how the organizers of contemporary art exhibitions around the world view the "Magiciens" as a reference point,it is concluded The relevant exhibition reviews of the research actually revolve around the discussion of the two issues of "the role of the curator" and "the relationship between Western and non-Western art".In the first part,it briefly sorts out the basic situation of the "Magiciens De La Terre" exhibition and the viewpoints of major critical articles around the world,and explains the reasons for the topic selection and the characteristics of innovation.The second part,starting from the social background of the exhibition,introduces the potential relationship between the society in which the "Magiciens De La Terre" exhibition is located in France and the artistic turn and exhibition.The world entered the late Cold War in the 1980 s.Under the influence of Reagan and British Thatcherism represented by the New Right,they pursued conservative political ideas.They advocated neoliberal protection policies to protect their own interests in the economy.Advocating "globalization" in culture.Paris,France,has always been forced to transfer its self-proclaimed cultural and artistic center after the war,and there is an urgent need to reinterpret Paris as an international arts and cultural center.The third part introduces the curator’s ideas and exhibition scene.Starting from the historical and cultural backgrounds and systems of the two exhibition venues,the curator’s ideas were sorted out,including the proposal of the exhibition theme,specific selection criteria,and the ethnographic curatorial method pioneered by the Mardan team,which will influence the design of future exhibitions.Finally,it restores the distribution and spatial relationship of artists in the "Magiciens De La Terre" exhibition,and analyzes the work strategies of Western and non-Western artists.The fourth part is the focus of this article.Textual research on critical works and essay reports triggered by the "Magiciens De La Terre" exhibition since 1989,summarized into "exhibition themes","author exhibitions","colonial exhibitions","site differences",and "non-Western" The five themes of "Artist’s Entry into the Western Mechanism" reductively interpret relevant comments and classify various art comment systems triggered by the exhibition.In the concluding remarks,the research on the interpretation of the above thematic commentary found that the commentary revolves around two points: one is the art criticism of the curator as the main body of the exhibition,and the other is the actual discussion about the difference between Western and non-Western art in the exhibition.According to the interpretation,these five thematic comments can actually be summarized as the analysis of two main subjects: the change of the role of the curator,the relationship between the West and the non-Western art,and then give his own commentary analysis,in more than 30 years In the context of post-art already globalization,re-examining the critical literature of Magiciens reminds us to maintain independence and difference at all times.
