| In the domain of modernism-art since the beginning of the 20 th century,"body" is no longer merely a concept in the biological sense, but a carrier with multiple cultural connotations and ideas.Hannah H(?)ch(1889-1978)was the only female artist in the Berlin Dada group at the burgeon of the 20 th century. In a society dominated by white men of the last century, her artistic achievements were marginalized and even ignored by critics. It was not until the 1980 s that her unique artistic language gained widespread spotlight in the United States and Germany. This paper attempts to utilize the body symbol as the starting point to explore the final appearance of the body symbol in Hannah H(?)ch’s works,so as to investigate her attention to gender, identity, and race in her works. The body symbol has become a crucial medium of her artistic expression of views.H(?)ch’s creations always show the application of body symbols and the thinking about the body. The "body" has also become a weapon for H(?)ch to further establish self-identity,to question traditional aesthetics, and to challenge the stereotypical social system. This article consists of four chapters, and the first chapter directly uses the concept of "body" to exemplify that the symbol of "body",in the context of aesthetics and art history, has gradually evolved into an important method of expression in art.The second chapter analyzes the emergence and establishment of body consciousness from the background of Hannah H(?)ch’s time and the marginal situation in early artistic practice. The third chapter analyzes in detail the presentation and expression of body symbols in H(?)ch’s works, from the early "cyborg" images that assemble new female bodies with machines and commodities,to the "hermaphrodite" where the bodies of men and women are juxtaposed. The image, and even the image of the "mixed race" juxtaposition of non-Western and Western white bodies, and the emergence of separate body organs, have crystally exhibited that the body in H(?)ch’s works has transformed from completeness to fragmentation, from harmony to absurdity, from duality to pluralism, and from the kernel to the edge.and meanwhile, the body symbol has become a battlefield for H(?)ch’s conceptual expression. The fourth chapter mainly explores the cultural connotation and meaning of body symbols in H(?)ch’s works. It is not only the establishment of her self-identity,but also the resistance to the dualistic body aesthetics and to the existing unfair social system.Through the research, this paper draws the following conclusions about Hannah H(?)ch’s art: 1.The body symbol changes from the whole to the fragmentation, from the dual-boundary to the multiple fuzzy boundary.2.Each variation of Hannah H(?)ch’s body symbols implies a transformation in her thinking about the construction of her own identity, namely from a clear female identity to the pursuit of no identity.3.The body symbols in H(?)ch’s works are of drastic criticism and avant-garde,and they manifest more in-depth thinking about human beings itself. Therefore, whether it is a body of material desire,a body tagged by gender,a mixed-race body or even a fragmented body,H(?)ch’s concept of the body is a pursuit of a body without boundaries, shattering the established boundaries and to seek a free body.As a member of modernism,Hannah H(?)ch’s body view has also exerted certain influence on the body view of modern art. |
