| Mao Dun,as a great master of modern Chinese literature, went to Chongqing twice during the Anti-Japanese war,and Chongqing became an important object of his works during the Anti-Japanese War.The background, theme and characterization of these novels are closely related to the living conditions, thoughts and behaviors of all social strata in Chongqing during the wartime.Through the exploration and presentation of these novels,we can comprehensively and systematically reflect the "image of Chongqing" in Mao Dun’s mind from different angles. This paper mainly from five aspects.First, the social background of Chongqing as the capital during the Anti-Japanese war.During the war,Chongqing, relying on its geographical advantages, changed from a small city that no one cared about to a "commanding platform" for the national Anti-Japanese war. With the announcement of the national government to move the capital to Chongqing,Chongqing gradually became the political, economic and cultural center at that time. The change of identity attracted a large number of war immigrants from all over the country to move here.Secondly,Mao Dun’s main experiences and activities during his stay in Chongqing.Unlike those who went to Chongqing on their own initiative,Mao Dun went there on a mission from the Communist Party to constrain the Kuomintang on a cultural level. Therefore, this purpose, together with his social activities, what he saw and heard in Chongqing, profoundly influenced the "image of Chongqing" constructed in his novels.Thirdly, the image of Chongqing in Mao Dun’s novels. In the environmental image,Mao Dun thinks that the fog of Chongqing is symbolic, and the society of Chongqing under the thick fog is abnormal and morbid. In the cultural image, the image of Chongqing conceived by Mao Dun reflects that Chongqing at that time had two functions of "political metaphor" and "ideological function" through the content, plot and characterization of the novel, with a very strong political color.Fourth, the image of Chongqing created by Mao Dun is the result of many factors. Some methods and principles of Marxism provide guidance for the creation of Mao Dun’s novels;the need of the party’s cultural work determines Mao Dun’s choice of the political function of novels, which is the premise of constructing the "image of Chongqing" in his novels;Mao Dun’s life experience in Chongqing directly determines the "image of Chongqing" in his novels;and the different attitudes of the Kuomintang and the Communist Party towards Mao Dun are further strengthened Mao Dun’s aversion to Chongqing is deepened.Fifth, from a political point of view,Mao Dun’s novels with Chongqing as the background have unique value.By using the creative method of revolutionary realism,he presented the real "Chongqing image" to the world. On the one hand,he deeply criticized the bloody cruelty and corruption of the Kuomintang government,on the other hand,he sympathized with the general public under the rule of the Kuomintang government. However, there are also some shortcomings in these novels, such as "theme first",politicization and simplification. |
