In line with the deepening cooperation between China and Nigeria,Chinese language teaching in Nigeria has seen rapid development.As one of the earliest countries in Africa to establish Confucius Institutes,at present Nigeria has set up two Confucius Institutes in Nnamdi Azikiwe University and Lagos State University.In addition,11 Confucius Classrooms have been established with the capacity to teach more than 10,000 students.In recent years,there has been an increase in the number of research conducted based on the two Confucius Institutes,but insufficient research is done on the Confucius Classrooms in Nigeria.This paper therefore focuses particularly on Confucius Classrooms by analyzing the characteristics and problems of Chinese learners in the Confucius Classroom of Federal Polytechnic Oko,under Nnamdi Azikiwe University.Compared with the Confucius Institute of Nnamdi Azikiwe University,there are certain differences regarding the enrollment of teachers and teaching resources in the Confucius Classroom Federal Polytechnic Oko.In order to teach Chinese language effectively while bridging the cultural gap between the two countries,it is necessary to understand the learning needs and objectives of these Chinese language learners.Therefore,based on Masuhara’s demand analysis theory,this paper studies the learning needs of Chinese language students in Federal Polytechnic Oko by using means of investigation,statistics,interviews and other methods,in order to clarify the factors and categorize the differences that affect Chinese learning of this group,and ultimately to guide the teaching practice.This study is divided into five parts:The first chapter describes the reasons for choosing the topic,research background,literature review,theoretical basis,research content and methods.The second chapter elaborates the basic situation of Chinese teaching in Nigeria,including the Nigerian Chinese teaching system and institutions,Nigerians’ attitude and motivation towards learning Chinese Language,and the teaching system of Confucius Classroom in the Federal Polytechnic Oko.The third chapter focuses on investigation and analysis of the learning needs of Chinese language students in Confucius Classroom Federal Polytechnic Oko.It mainly includes the basic information of the respondents;the process of investigating and analyzing the learning needs of Chinese language learners;and the analysis of teachers’ influence on students’ learning needs.In the investigation of the students’Chinese learning needs,we analyzed the current Chinese proficiency of students,expectations,demand for Chinese classroom and teaching process of the learners.The fourth chapter analyzes the problems and suggestions of Chinese teaching in Confucius Classroom of Federal Polytechnic Oko,mainly from the perspectives of learners,teachers,teaching materials,classroom environment,testing,etc.,and puts forward suggestions for improvement.In the fifth chapter,conclusions will be drawn based upon the analysis in the previous chapters.
