A Report On The E-C Translation Of Self-Help Books

In today’s world,with rapid economic development,our society has sped up its pace in normal life and become more competitive than ever.Modern people who are under pressure thus pursue self-improvement on the one hand,and suffer from physical and mental problems on the other hand.As early as two centuries ago,self-help books had seen its birth abroad because of religious beliefs and other reasons,after which it was enriched and earned a place in the book market.Up to date,self-help books have covered a wide range of personal problems.For the less affluent people who are privacy-conscious and of mild symptoms,self-help book can be a good way to get help.The development of self-help literature at home,however,is relatively slow.Therefore,the author believes that proper translation and introduction of relevant works from abroad may play a role in helping those in need.Based on this,the author selected two typical self-help books as the translation materials,discussed the possible problems in the translation,and gave solutions to these problems by analyzing the text from the perspective of the textual characteristics of self-help books.As the text are both informative and operative,the author finds that it is viable to translate self-help books by giving full consideration to the information delivery and cultural context.For information delivery,it is essential to make the translation accurate,smooth and comprehensive with the help of online resources and annotation,as well as pay attention to the coherence and consistency of the text.For cultural context,social psychology,different mindsets and emotional color of words should be considered,so as to better express what the original text intends to convey.It is also the author’s hope that the analysis and solutions in the report will be of some use for the translation of self-help books and even beyond in the future,and further benefit more readers of self-help books,bringing them a better life.
