| This thesis takes the Zhou brothers’ translation of Hungarian literature as the research object,examines the general situation of the their translation and introduction of Hungarian literature,explores the historical context and internal logic behind their introduction,and pays attention to their translation strategies for Hungarian literature,finally analyzes their influence on translating Hungarian literature.The first chapter "The General Situation of the Zhou brother’s Translation and Introduction of Hungarian Literature",starts with their translation which finished in Japan when they had the closest relationship,pays attention to the beginning of their translation and introduction of Hungarian literature.Secondly,they translated fifteen works including poems,written by Pet(?)fi Sándor,Jokai Mor,Mikszáth Kálmán,Hermynia Zur Mühlen,Emil Reich,Andor Gábor.It can be found that the works chosen by the Zhou brothers either had a high evaluation in the literature history,or had a great influence at the time.Chapter Two "The Historical Context and Internal Logic of the Zhou Brothers’ Translation and Introduction of Hungarian Literature",focuses on the reasons why Hungarian literature has entered the perspective of the Zhou Brothers’ literature translation.First of all,the Zhou brothers were influenced by the "historical record of the subjugation of the country" and the nationalist trend of thought in the late Qing Dynasty.Secondly,Lu Xun and Zhou Zuoren have different starting points in translating Hungarian literature.Lu Xun’s foothold in translating and introducing Hungarian literature lies in the "weak nation-state" and upholds the concept of “establishing personality” in which literature can "reform the national character and society".In addition,Zhou Zuoren often translates works based on his literary interests.At the same time,there are also accidental and secondary factors such as language structure and accidental availability of materials.Chapter Three,"Zhou Brothers’ Translation Strategies of Hungarian Literature",on the one hand,distinguishes the difference between Lu Xun and Zhou Zuoren’stranslation concepts.Lu Xun’s translation is "for life" and Zhou Zuoren’s translation is "for myself".Hungarian literature is the ideological resource used by Lu Xun for enlightenment.Zhou Zuoren held the same attitude as Lu Xun in his early days,but showed his interest in literary taste and aesthetics,which imply a contradictory attitude between utilitarian and non-utilitarian.On the other hand,the Zhou brothers adopted a common translation strategy.Both of them chose translate Hungarian literary works from non-Hungarian versions due to the limitation of language structure,and their translation methods both changed from "free translation" to "literal translation",from using classical Chinese to using vernacular.Chapter 4,"The Influence of Zhou Brothers’ Hungarian Literature Translation and Dissemination",focuses on the influence of Zhou Brothers’ Hungarian literature translation on their own creation and subsequent translators.Their translation of Hungarian literature and their writing are intertextual.The Zhou brothers’ translation of Hungarian literature and their writing are intertextual.Under the influence of the Zhou brothers,the younger translators such as Mao Dun,Bai Mang,Sun Yong and members of the Zhaohua Society translated the Hungarian literature.In a word,the Zhou brothers’ translation of Hungarian literature has made unique contributions to Chinese modern literature,translated literature,and Sino-foreign relations in twentieth centuryThe Zhou brothers pioneered the translation and introduction of Hungarian literature in the twentieth century,having a profound impact,which promoted the exchange of literature and culture between China and Hungary. |
