This is a translation project report based on the popular science book Even More Things That Nobody Knows: 501 Further Mysteries of life, the Universe and Everything(part 1-274)by British writer William Hartson. The book aims to explore the boundaries of human knowledge and covers a wide range of topics, listing 501 of the world’s unsolved mysteries, involving history, physics, chemistry, biology and other fields. The articles in this book are also enlightening and interesting, suitable for non-professionals to read. This translation project report consists of four parts, namely, translation project background, translation project description, case study and translation project summary. As an informational book, the main difficulties in the translation of the book can be divided into three aspects: vocabulary, syntax and semantic.Vocabulary difficulties include the translation of professional terms, names of people, places and books.Syntactic difficulties include the translation of long sentences and the arrangement of sentence logic.Semantic difficulties include the semantic differences between the English text and the target language text.In order to achieve the goal of conveying popular science information, the translator adopted Hans Vermeer’s Skopos Theory as the guiding theory, and used translation strategies including increasing, decreasing and decomposing translation to solve each difficulty step by step,so as to make the translation acceptable to the target language readers while remaining faithful to the original text. The translator learnt through this translation practice, and had a deep understanding that the translation of popular science texts needs to be professional, meticulous, rigorous and coherent, and the coordination between the translators and team members in the project is also crucial. The translator also gained a more systematic understanding of the theoretical framework and application of skopos theory, which will be of great help in guiding future translation work.
