Modern equestrian was originated in Britain in the 1700 s.So far,modern equestrian has been a relatively perfect industrial chain,including advanced stable management,horse management,riding club establishment and riding skill training.However,Chinese equestrian still faces challenges,such as lacking of complete educational system and professionals due to its lagging development.It is necessary to bring in the advanced British equestrian educational system to improve these deficiencies in the Chinese equestrian field.The book is one part of the BHS(British Horse Society)official textbook series.It describes the examination procedures and contents of the PTT(Preliminary Teaching Test),focusing on cultivating qualified equestrian coaches,which is of referential value for the Chinese equestrian.The book has a translated version.After reading its translated version,many deficiencies are found in the existing translated version,which are not in line with the Chinese writing style and affect the readability of the text.Therefore,the author decides to retranslate The BHS Training Manual for the PTT.The features of the source text are analyzed at the lexical level,syntactical level and textual level.The source text is an equestrian textbook,and the translation accuracy and linguistic normalization should be taken into consideration in translation process.The back-transformation theory emphasizes that the accuracy and normalization of the target language should be noticed in the three stages of translation(analysis,transfer and restructuring),which can be applied into the textbook translation.Under the guidance of back-transformation theory,the translation of this equestrian textbook is carried out from the lexical level,syntactical level and textual level.At the lexical level,literal translation and wording are used to ensure the accuracy of terminologies.At the syntactical level,linear translation,reverse translation and reconstruction are applied into the translation practice to ensure the fluency of sentences.At the textual level,cohesion can be achieved through repetition;coherence can be achieved through addition.After finishing the translation task,the author compares her translated version with the existing translated version lexically and syntactically,so that deficiencies in the existing translated version can be noticed.Lexically,the foreign measurement units are not translated accurately,and certain words are translated improperly in the existing translated version.The author adds annotations for foreign measurement units and adopts free translation for the translation of terminologies in her translated version to ensure the accuracy of the translation.Syntactically,unclear referential relationship,redundancy and unclear logic relationship are included in the existing translated version.The author avoids these deficiencies through concretizing the personal pronouns,deleting redundant sentence parts and restructuring sentences in her translated version.Finally,the author finds that the writing style and reading habits of target readers should be taken into consideration in the translation process.This report shows that Nida’s back-transformation theory can guide the translation of equestrian textbooks.Under the guidance of this theory,the information in the source text can be conveyed accurately to help equestrian students learn equestrian knowledge comprehensively and promote the normalization of equestrian textbook translation.Hopefully,the translation strategy applied in this report can provide a reference for the translation in the equestrian field and other related fields.
