| This is a report on the E-C translation practice of Nurturing Resilience: Helping Clients Move Forward from Developmental Trauma.It is a typical scientific and technological text with a high degree of specialization.As a psychological book about early childhood trauma,the Chinese version of Nurturing Resilience aims at introducing domestic readers the leading foreign researches on developmental trauma.The practice report discusses typical problems at the lexical,syntactic and textual level in translating Chapter Two of Nurturing Resilience and tries to propose solutions.And it uses Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory to explain these solutions from contextual adaptation,structural adaptation as well as salience of adaptation.Adaptation Theory regards communication as a process of variability and negotiability in using languages;communicators shall make contextual and structural adaptation in accordance with communicative purpose.This applies to translation.In this practice,the following solutions have been applied.At the lexical level,the translator takes account of both the psychological communicative context and the text linguistic context.For terms,conventional expressions are searched and adopted to ensure professionalism and accuracy.The meaning of common words is extended based on the linguistic context to make the target text more precise and natural.At the syntactic level,passive sentences,and long and complex sentences are translated with translation techniques such as conversion of passive voices,linear translation,division,omission and word order adjustment.This adaptation to the Chinese structure makes the target text more fluent.At the textual level,the translator uses reorganization as well as cohesion means such as reference and lexicon repetition to make the target text coherent and readable.In a word,translators should exert their subjectivity to achieve a good communication effect.They should make contextual and structural adaptation when selecting the word meaning,transforming sentence patterns,and constructing discourse.In addition,translators shall equip themselves with the professional knowledge in a specific field,the ability of acquiring information and critical thinking to ensure the quality of translation. |
