Abstract/Summary:
Guangzhou,as the core city of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area,Lingnan Cultural Center and the only professional documentary festival venue in China,has natural economic,cultural and geographical advantages.From 2003 to 2019,during the seventeen years of meticulous operation,the China(Guangzhou)International Documentary Film Festival was ranked among the "International Eight Documentary Film Festivals",and Guangzhou is also gained the reputation of "China’s most documentary city".Regardless of economic level,location situation,or cultural industry investment,Guangzhou has the advantage of using documentary films to construct and disseminate city images.However,even documentaries that "infinitely approach reality" are art forms that have been artificially limited and designed.Through the frame,the camera viewfinder and the edge of the screen,the starting and ending points of the visual space are set,thereby limiting what the audience wants to "see";through the design of narrative structure and audiovisual language,such as editing techniques,selection of composition methods,light and shadow The presentation of the effect,the way the camera moves,the choice of music and sound,etc.,guide the audience to "how to watch".Therefore,this article uses text analysis,case studies and other methods to focus on how the documentary constructs the urban image of Guangzhou,how to construct the urban image through audio-visual means,what kind of Guangzhou image is designed and constructed,and the underlying reasons behind it,and how to carry out the city the problem of image transmission.The opening content first defines the definition of documentary film,city image and other related concepts,and determines the two dimensions of Guangzhou’s city image:material city image elements and intangible city image,and categorizes the collected documentary films,summarizes the emergence stage.The documentary types and characteristics of the city image of Guangzhou.The third chapter uses time as a clue to sort out the design and construction methods of Guangzhou urban image documentary in the three development stages of humanistic documentary,civilian documentary,and social documentary,and the social power discourse game behind it.The author believes that the "camera" acts as the viewer’s possession of the point of view lens and becomes the visual counterpart of the discourse power.It is related to the power discourse structure of the society at that time,and is a presentation or resistance to the power discourse structure of the society at that time.The discourse text in the period of human culture documentary pursues beauty and ignores the documentary,and political discourse combines with elite discourse;the documentary period in the civilian documentary period explores the text that returns to reality and is accompanied by the popularization of political discourse;the period of social documentary period returns to the mainstream discourse.The fourth chapter starts from Pierce’s notion of symbols,and explains the multiple constructions of Guangzhou’s urban image in the documentary from the perspectives of iconic symbols,indicator symbols and convention symbols.The author found that the urban image of Guangzhou in the documentary can be summarized into five types: "Eat in Guangzhou","Famous Historical and Cultural City","Millennium Business Capital","Large City of Foreign Population" and "Popular City",and their respective encoding and decoding processes Each has its own advantages.Documentary film producers and distributors have adopted different symbolic expressions for the above different types to achieve the best communication effect.However,there are also problems with too many food symbols and too few modern symbols.The fifth chapter analyzes the dissemination mode of Guangzhou city image documentary,and believes that in the process of disseminating Guangzhou city image,the documentary has a single communicator,the quality of the content needs to be improved,and the potential of the communication channel has not been fully tapped.Propose corresponding problems in the existing problems.The concluding part puts forward personal insights on the design of cultural systems that enhance the construction and dissemination of Guangzhou documentary films and promote the development of the Guangzhou documentary film industry.
