A Study Of Guo Moruo’s Thoughts On Translation Through Selected English Poem Translation

Guo Moruo is a well-known Chinese modern poet as well as a novelist,dramatist,literary theorist and a great translator.He started translating in 1915.In his half a century translation career,he not only accomplished an insuperable achievement in a number of translation projects but also developed a solid theory on translation.The Creation rule is one of his typical translation thoughts.As one of the representative figures in the modern translated literature of China,Guo advocates that the qualified translation equals to creation.In the current researches about Guo’s translation thought,most scholars analyze and explore his thoughts from his early translation activities,while few studies have carried out in-depth exploration of his translation activities in his later years,in which he translated 50 English poems into Chinese.This thesis dissects his poem translation activities in later years based on the text analysis of Selected English Poem Translation,explores the characteristics of translating English poems into Chinese and probes into Guo’s translation thought through material selection,translation strategies and his comments on eight poems in this book.Through analysis,it’s clear that Guo has always regarded the creativity as the key and core principle in his translation process.He succeeded in keeping the inner charm and spirit by using various poetic forms,rhythms,sentences and words patterns flexibility while changing the form of the original text.In addition,the research argues that ideology has exerted influence on Guo’s translation in light of the theory of ideology manipulation.It reveals that Guo’s personal ideology shows a quiet but strong protest against the social main stream through the placid translation action.Overall,this thesis also reviews roughly Guo’s poem writing and translation in terms of time,poetic form and themes.Through which we can see Guo has kept his romantic disposition to borrow the poem to express his personal feelings by using creative principle even though he was in a high status.In one word,Guo’s persistence on and praise of creativity have been embodied clearly in his last poem translation in later years.Research on Selected English Poem Translation not only helps us have a more comprehensive and objective understanding on Guo’s translation thought but also does great benefit to bring us guidance on literary translation,especially on the flexibility and complexity of poetry translation.
