The translation material for this English-Chinese translation project is selected from How Learning Happens, which is a volume of academic essays in the field of education. The book contains six parts and this translation practice material is selected from the fourth part of the book. Some seminal articles on learning and teaching are selected from the fields of educational psychology and cognitive psychology in this book, which has high reference value and positive significance for teachers who want to fully participate in educational research or readers who are interested in teaching. The selected material of this translation practice is an applied informative text with highly academic value, which belongs to a non-literary translation practice. The language style of the source text is formal and rigorous, which is characterized by some complex sentences, but most of the words used are simple, precise and scientific, and there are many proper nouns and terminologies in the source text. This translation practice is mainly guided by Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory. The main key and difficult points are the translation of titles, translation of complex sentences, and the translation of special terms and the translation of some words that undergo semantic changes in the context. Some translation strategies and methods such as free translation, semantic extension, conversion and sentence reconstruction are adopted by the translator to deal with translation at lexical and syntactic levels. In this translation practice, the translator finds that communicative translation theory together with the mentioned translation methods, the translation of the such text can be effectively completed, and the information can be more correctly conveyed to the readers. In this translation practice, the translator comes to the following conclusions: 1)the translator’s attitude plays an important role in improving the quality of the translation.Translating is a challenging work, and it requires both professional knowledge and serious academic attitude.2)In translating such an academic informative text, the academic of the original text must be retained by the translator to the greatest extent.3)When dealing with the special terms whose meanings may vary in the text, the translator must choose the most suitable one according to the specific context and background information.4)The translator’s critical thinking ability, logical thinking ability, judgment ability and reasoning ability which plays a very significant role in the translation process.5)Translator should lay a certain theoretical foundation, and master the rules, methods and skills of translation through continuous practice so that she can better deal with different types of text translation in the future.
