The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education advocates three learning methods: autonomy,cooperation and inquiry.In learning,students pay attention to listening,be willing to communicate,try boldly,learn to explore independently,cooperate and help each other.Group cooperative learning is one of the new learning methods advocated under the new curriculum standards,and also an important teaching organization form in English class.Group cooperative learning plays a vital role in improving the efficiency and quality of English reading class and improving students’ cognitive and non-cognitive factors of English reading.How to effectively play the role of group cooperative learning is a field worth exploring.In this study,the C Middle School in Shandong Province where the author teaches is taken as a case school,and the eighth grade students are taken as the research subjects.Two parallel classes are randomly selected to set up an experimental class and a control class for a four-month teaching experiment.In the experimental class,the teaching model of group cooperative is used,while in the control class,the traditional PWP teaching model is still used,so as to comprehensively explore the impact of the teaching model of group cooperative learning on the reading ability and reading attitude of rural junior high school students.The author analyzes the students’ overall reading ability from the following two dimensions: the comprehension ability of words and sentences,and the comprehension ability of paragraphs and discourses.The test paper,questionnaire,interview are used to explore the English reading performance of 45 students in the experimental class and the control class.The detailed research questions are:(1)Whether the application of group cooperative learning in rural junior high school has an effect on students’ English reading ability? If so,what are effects?(2)What are the effects of group cooperative learning on English reading ability of students with different English proficiency levels?(3)How does group cooperative learning affect junior high school students’ reading attitude(initiative and confidence)?The study finds that:First,group cooperative learning can improve junior high school students’ English reading ability.And it has a significant effect on the comprehension of words and sentences,and paragraphs and discourses.And the improvement effect on the comprehension ability of words and sentences is better than that of paragraphs and discourses.The teaching model of group cooperative learning has more advantages than the traditional teaching method.Second,compared with the traditional teaching model,group cooperative learning has significant advantages in improving the overall reading ability for high-level students.It can improve the comprehension ability of words and sentences,and paragraphs and discourses,and the improvement effect on the comprehension ability of words and sentences is better than that of paragraphs and discourses for high-level students.Also,group cooperative learning has significant advantages in improving the overall reading ability for medium-level students.It can improve the comprehension ability of words and sentences,and paragraphs and discourses,and the improvement effect on the comprehension ability of words and sentences is basically the same as the comprehension ability of paragraphs and discourses for medium-level students.However,group cooperative learning doesn’t play a significant positive role for low-level students in improving the overall reading ability.It doesn’t have significant advantages in improving the comprehension ability of words and sentences,and paragraphs and discourses.Therefore,more effective teaching model should be explored and students should be taught according to their aptitude.Third,group cooperative learning not only improves the cognitive ability of junior high school students,but also has a positive impact on non-cognitive factors.In the process of cooperation,students’ participation in the classroom has been enhanced,students’ interest in English reading has been stimulated,and the collision of thinking has been realized through full discussion and communication,so as to gather ideas and make common progress.At the same time,the harmonious cooperation atmosphere promotes harmonious interpersonal relationships,establishes the friendship of helping each other,and cultivates students’ sense of responsibility and mission.This study reveals the influence of group cooperation on rural junior high school students’ English reading ability and reading attitude,which has positive significance for the current teaching and learning of English reading class.It is a complex and long process to improve rural junior high school students’ English reading ability.Teachers should try to constantly enrich the theoretical basis of cooperative learning,practice cooperative learning research experiments,explore innovative cooperative learning methods,and promote the progress of junior high school English reading teaching. |
