A Report On The Translation Of The Future Of Frontiers

This report is based on the translation of “The Future of Frontiers”,an article written by Scott J.Shackelford on the legal issues concerning areas outside national jurisdiction,especially in cyberspace.The source text is an academic legal article characterized by preciseness and persuasiveness.However,as a variety of legal writing,the source text,in contrast with judgements and legislative documents,represents a more vivid choice of words and is characterized by the use of metaphors at the lexical level.This report analyzes the linguistic features of the source text,explains the process of the translation,including preparation before translation and translation schedule,etc.and presents cases extracted from the translation of the source text,where cognitive metaphor theory and Systematic Functional Grammar are applied and explained.Several translation methods including complementary translation and word conversion are adopted on the translation of metaphors in the source text.In order to address the translation problems relating to technical terms,a cognitive model under the framework of LCCM is built to identify the access site from all potential meanings for the word being discussed.A comparison between the cognitive model of the words in the source language and that of the proposed words in the target language is made afterward to ensure the right choice of words.
