| This report is based on the author’s simulated consecutive interpreting experience for one of the roundtable meetings of the 7th China Inbound-Outbound Forum. The roundtable meeting is focused on the theme “The Digital Economy Dividend: What to Make in the Changing Context of Financial Services”.Participants include notable professors from top universities, entrepreneurs of established companies, foreign ambassadors, and government officials. The author reflects on his performance in this interpreting task and finds that word-for-word translation is a major problem in his interpreting output. In order to overcome this problem in his future interpreting tasks, the author turns to Interpretive Theory of Translation for help. The theory holds that successful writing and interpreting is based on an understanding of the message in the source language and the restatement of that message in the target language, focusing on the sense instead of the words of the original language.By analyzing the reasons for the problem and possible approaches to handle them, the author finds that paraphrase, amplification, omission, and reorganization are effective tools to reproduce the meaning of the speeches and improve the quality of interpreting output.Hopefully, with help of this report, the author can deliver more accurate and comprehendible interpreting output that can best convey the meaning of the original speeches in his future interpreting practices. |
