| Interpreting is an act of communication between people of different languages.The Paris school of the Interpretive Theory of Translation believes that to ensure effective communication,it is necessary to deverbalize and convey the meaning expressed by the speaker.Therefore,the object of interpreting is not the form of language,but the“sense”.Based on the interpretive theory of translation,the author illustrates the definition and classification of deverbalization.This paper studies the author’s interpreting performance in a real-life online conference in which several guests discussed the emergence of streaming-first films in China and looks into the issue of the lack of deverbalization after transcribing and analyzing the text of the source and target language.Based on previous studies and characteristics of the studied case,the author lists three types of insufficiently deverbalized examples: improper Chinesecontextualized lexical choice,lack of syntactic reformulation,and improper logic conversion,and gives modified versions.After consulting relevant literature and drawing lessons from the experience,the author puts forward relevant coping strategies.In terms of lexical choice,the coping strategies include practicing Chinese-English retelling and enhancing preparation before translation.In terms of sentence restructuring,the coping strategies include combining and reordering sentences.In terms of logic,the coping strategies include converting logical connectives according to different language habits and grasping the implicit logic and intention.This paper aims to enrich the case study of deverbalization in Chinese-English interpreting and provide help for interpreters who encounter similar situation. |
