Translation Of Financial English In The Light Of Acceptability In Text Linguistics--A Report On Translating Futures & Options For Dummies (An Excerpt)

This translation report is based on the translation of Futures & Options for Dummies(An Excerpt),a financial English book.Its author,Joe Duarte,introduces futures and options trading with simple but interesting expressions so as to provide its readers with some trading experience.Thus,it is worthwhile to offer a translation for Chinese readers.Although a lot of studies have been conducted on financial English texts,they are rarely concerned about the acceptability of textuality from the perspective of text linguistics.Text linguistics defines a text as a communicative event,and only the target text achieve its communicative purpose can it be acceptable at the textual level.In translation practice,the author chooses Chapters 17-22 as the ST.Firstly,by analyzing the translation of the whole source text(ST)in accordance with the acceptability in text linguistics,the author summarizes the features of financial English texts and relevant translation skills so as to make modest contributions to translation studies.Then,the author selects typical cases and analyzes translation in the aspect of intentionality,cohesion,coherence,informativity,situationality,and intertextuality and explores how to achieve the acceptability of the translated text.During the process,the author has profound understandings of main differences and similarities between English and Chinese.The major findings through this translation practice are as follows: 1)Actually,translation begins with the intention of the text producer and ends with the acceptance of readers so as to achieve the communicative purpose.As the subject of translation,the translator is not only the reader of the original text,but also the creator of the translation.2)The acceptability at the textual level is based on and reflected in other six standards.The acceptability of the text can show the real intention of the text producer,remain cohesive and coherent,involve appropriate and clear information,conform to the specific situation and reproduce the style of the original text.3)Due to the differences between Chinese and English in text reconstruction,the translator should make some flexible adjustments in translation to make the target text(TT)acceptable at the textual level,so as to realize the cross-language and cross-cultural communication from the ST to the TT.In terms of intentionality,the translator should accurately and effectively transmit the text information to target readers by choosing or adding proper words and phrases in an attempt to demonstrate the intention of the text producer;in terms of cohesion,the translator should maintain or omit the cohesive devices;in terms of coherence,the translator should lay emphasis on semantic level by adjusting the order of clauses and rearranging them in the way that the target language appreciates;in terms of informativity,the translator should upgrade or downgrade information by applying addition and omission so as to make it more acceptable for target readers;in terms of situationality,the translator should adopt appropriate words,phrases and sentences on the basis of specific context to recreate a financial situation;in terms of intertextuality,the translator should reproduce the style of the ST by using free translation to create more authentic expressions in an attempt to bring about similar effects to target readers.
