| This translation report is based on the translation practice of the excerpts of a detective novel The Bradys’ Race for Life(Chapter1-6),which tells Blood covets the inheritance right of his niece Miss.Evelyn Grimm,so he hired the Tough Trio to design an arson murder.Old King Brady and Young Brady,the top detectives of the Secret Service,fought against these villains in a race of life.This novel gives vivid descriptions to characters,environment,and conversations so as to develop the story.Considering target readers’ aesthetic styles and reading needs,the focus and difficulties in this translation task are to faithfully present the descriptions in the source text without neglecting the coherence and readability of the translation.Proposed by a German scholar Hans J.Vermeer,the Skopos Theory,highlights that translation purpose decides translation strategies and methods,and the target text should be faithful and coherent after fully considering the reading habits,aesthetic standards,and cognitive abilities of target readers.Thus,under the guidance of the theory,the translator uses addition and diction to attract readers.Substitution,conversion,and condensation are employed to make the target text coherent and readable.Division,restructuring,negation,etc.are adopted to reproduce the descriptions in the source text.The translation practice report contains four chapters,namely,Task Description,Process Description,Case Analysis,and Conclusion.The translations of the novel’s name,character title,and figures of speech are analyzed from skopos rule.Following coherence rule,the translator studies the translations of exclamations and short sentences.Abided by fidelity rule,the translations of appearance and conversation descriptions are achieved.The report points out that Skopos Theory can guide the translation of English detective novels and enlighten the translator to adopt appropriate translation skills to achieve the translation aims,and present the coherence and readability of translation while faithfully producing the information. |
